How to make a hot chocolate which can get you through a Computer Systems lecture

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

For this you need two things…

  • A Moka coffee shop or something similar,
  • And a shop which sells marshmallows (the big ones not the mini-variety).
From Random Phone …
  1. Purchase a tall (very important) hot chocolate from the aforementioned coffee shop.
  2. Buy a packet of marshmallows, preferably the pink\white packet.
  3. Find a safe place to sit down and remove the lid from the hot chocolate.
  4. This is the tricky bit - you have to drink some of the hot chocolate to make room for around 3 to 6 mallows.
  5. Make sure you don’s splash them or you (and others around you) could get seriously injured.
  6. Replace the lid, and leave to melt.
  7. When you can swirl the cup with out the feeling of solid objects hitting the inside of the cup you may drink, but not before.

Enjoy!

  • Steps one and two are interchangable.

Web App Dev - Assignment 2

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

Got my result back for Coursework Assignment 2

Nice clear design to site. Very good and appropriate use of DHTML and JS. Everything present and correct, including validation (couldn’t get the Contact link to work, though, but this is a minor complaint). Good range of JS constructs and DHTML elements. Excellent report: well structured, good detail and very well presented. Overall an excellent effort. A.

Joelene wanted me to add she got a B+, which if you round up is also an A.

CameaWorld - Your first choice for cameras

Monday, November 27th, 2006

Camera world now has a semi-fully-functioning search form!

Camera world is my third assignment for Web Application Development, and is going very badly.

Users can now search for a camera dependent on Make and Type. There is a slight problem with the validation of price. Rather than the whole number in the box being validated for “max is-more-than min”

Anyhoo, Back to work.

Microsoft Expression Web - the new FrontPage

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

Just downloaded one of the replacements for Microsoft Frontpage - Microsoft Expression Web. Basically there are two types of FrontPage replacements, SharePoint (which is part of the new office suite) and Expression (a new group of graphic programs aimed at developers and designers) . I’m using Expression simply because my host doesn’t support SharePoint extensions.

I should point out that on the whole Dreamweaver v FrontPage thing, I’m firmly on the side of FrontPage, with all it’s faults Microsoft knows how to make things easy to use. Why make web design more complicated than you have to?

There are three versions of Expression;

  • Graphic Designer - vector and bitmap graphics editor
  • Interactive Designer - user interface design tool for applications .
  • Web Designer - general web design program

I choose the latter, it seemed the most like FrontPage. So far it seems to be a cloan of FrontPage accessing my website (which was built using FrontPage) was as easy as ever, type in the URL, username and password. All of my files loaded and I could start editing.

The main difference is when editing the HTML code, the display is much clearer and objects like images, forms and URLs are highlighted to make them easier to spot. Other than that there is very little difference between it and MS Frontpage 2003, although the interface is a very odd shade or blue. CSS containers are quite nicely highlighted when editing within them, a small tag appears with their name.

Started a website for Kilrea Primary School

Saturday, November 25th, 2006

I was recently asked by Mrs Morrison, the principle at my old primary school, to help them design a website. By recently I mean at lease a couple of months ago. Today I started by pulling together bits of code from a few websites and resources.

The site is my first non-coursework PHP site and currently only has one page, so don’t try using the links. I have tried to keep the design as simple as possible the scheme is based on the school colours, light blue and navy.

If you would like to take a peek the address is below. If you see any problems please feel free to let me know, feedback is really useful.

Democracy is boring? Come to Northern Ireland…

Saturday, November 25th, 2006

Today was the latest in a long line of deadlines, Sinn Féin said yes, the DUP said yea, but no, but maybe. And the UUP and SDLP want to know what the DUP said.

Meanwhile…

Outside the assembly chamber in Parliament Buildings, Stormont…

The best bit, unfortunatly not on this video, is when the woman security guard whacks him over the head with his own gun.

Associated Jokes…

  • They got the revolving doors at Stormont working again, there was a stone stuck in it.
  • A Terroist walks in to Stormont, without being elected first
  • The previous two statements are not those of KG Internet or Keithblog, just very funny.

What is it with PHP and not working?

Friday, November 17th, 2006

I’m getting a growing dislike for anything which involves PHP to work properly and so far all I have to show for it is this. One thing I do like is that PHP has more than a passing resemblance to JAVA, which I do know as a language. One problem is how to get the mySQL database results to appear nice and prettily in my results page. I will be working on that over the weekend, non stop fun for me!

If you are intrigued by the coursework of a Computing with Geography student why not log on to the University of Ulster section of KG Internet.

Arrested Development

Sunday, November 12th, 2006

Before I head back to Coleraine for the week I thought I would let you in on a little secret.

If you haven’t already witnessed the greatest American sitcom since, well possibly ever, then welcome to the Bluth family of Arrested Development…

Series 1 and 2 are currently in the shops with the third and final (at the minute) series coming soon.
