Photoblog: Partaharju, Finland

Sunday, September 9th, 2007

Some calming pictures for your Sunday evening. These were taken during my recent trip to Finland. Partaharju and Lake Salvonen (see here) to be exact. We were staying at the headquarters of PTK the Finnish equivalent to the BB/GB. The Finnish countryside - and there’s lots of it - is a lot like Ireland. The only difference is where we would have cows and a few farm dwellings, they have forests.

Can you read maps?

Up until about a week ago I thought that I was quite good at reading maps and the symbols associated with them. However, while in Finland three of use were tasked with marking out the route of a 2 hour expedition which would be completed by around 2000, 5 to 11-year-olds over the course of the following three days.

We had a map on which the course was marked fully with a dotted lines. There were even arrows to make sure we would walk the right way round. Problem was we couldn’t even figure out where the start/finish line was supposed to go! We eventually found it and completed the walk after about three and a half hours.

Anyhoo, if you’re a dab-hand at the old map reading then try out this quiz from the BBC News Magazine…

I only managed 6/10, and that’s with a 4-year-old ‘A’ in GCSE Geography.

Fast forward past the first few, I had just got a new camera at that stage. There are still more to come in the future. If you would like to see some of the locations I have mapped some of the pictures using Picasa Web.

Finland calling! Just about to come to the end of my first week and am having a great time. I will have lots of photos to post when I get back to Norn Iron in a weeks time.

PS Saunas are much better if you have a Finnish lake to run into afterwards!

Or ‘From Northern Ireland to Finland‘ if you prefer.

Now that all various parts of the Belfast Agreement have been fully implemented I feel its safe to leave the country for a while. I’m going to spend a couple of weeks in Finland.
