Lesser Spotted Irish Mole

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

The bright sparks at B&Q in Northern Ireland spotted a gaping whole in the mole repellent market. Products were shipped over to NI stores where one was priced £19.98 and the other at £14.98. They did work extremely well, in fact after instillation it was reported one Irish gardener couldn’t spot a mole within 200 miles of his lawn. (more…)

DOE planning to move the Giant’s Causeway?

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Was taking my usual tour around the local press this morning when a headline drew my attention (the blur was added by myself, it’s not your eyes playing tricks)…

Could the Department of Environment have a plan to beat the climate change which threatens the Giant’s Causeway? Are they planning to put some of those excess army Chinooks to good use by air lifting it into the Mournes?

Well, the short answer is no. The real answer has more to do with Ian ‘walking disaster’ Junior’s mate (or not) Seymour Sweeney. The minister Arlene Foster wants to distance herself from the aforementioned’s application for the UNESCO World Heritage site - I think most would agree, that’s quite a sensible move.

Frozen water update

Friday, January 4th, 2008

There is indeed frozen hydrogen oxide falling from the skies above Northern Ireland. The ‘light dusting’ forecast by the meteorologists has turned into something of a blizzard in these ‘ere parts.

At the moment the snow is just starting to let off. If my fingers defrost you might get some more snowy photos.

Below is some of the pictures from my Picasa Web album. Enjoy.

Summer Sludge

Monday, August 27th, 2007

You should read this post using the green colour scheme.

A Marine Conservation Society report says that this summer’s weather has left some of Northern Ireland’s beaches - including Ballyholme, Carnlough and Newcastle - covered in raw sewage and other waste sludge. The Belfast Telegraph says this leaves the beaches at a standard lower than that required by the European Union.

Ths summer storms swept a large amount of raw sewage and rubbish out to sea which was subsequently washed back inland. The news highlights the need for radical reform of storm drains and sewage disposal system, and yes, maybe even water charges to fund it.

Plane sinks into Derry runway

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

A First Choice aeroplane was waiting on the tarmac when it began to sink. Passengers waiting to take-off for sunny Spain had to be taken off the plane before it could power itself free.

Anyone who has to fly into/out of the City of Derry Airport must feel a little anxious. The airport was shut-down in May by the Civil Aviation Authority due to safety concerns. The CAA are now waiting on the safety report of the subsiding runway.

The East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell thinks it would be in everyone’s interest for Derry City Council to stick to emptying bins, rather than running airports.

Ulster Folk and Transport Museum launch ‘Titanic’ website

Saturday, March 3rd, 2007

No, it didn’t just launch a really big website (bet you didn’t see that one coming?). The Ulster Folk and Transport Museum has launched what it calls one of the most wide-ranging website ever dedicated to the RMS Titanic and its history.

There is a huge (or ‘titanic’) collection of contemporary photographs and designers drawings from the real ship as well as newsreel footage. The website also incorporates sections about the construction, voyage and the aftermath of the iceberg. Some parts are still incomplete, but what’s there will keep you amused for a while

The Northern Ireland Tourist Board have identified the Titanic as one of the five projects which could have a significant impact on local and island-wide tourism.

Some parts are still incomplete, but what’s there will keep you amused for a while - www.titanicinbelfast.com is definitely one to bookmark.
