National Stadium at the Maze

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

Members of the assembly Culture, Arts and Leisure Committee are due to quiz the Minister of Fun Edwin Poots on his plans for the former HMP Maze site later today at Stormont.

If Good Morning Ulster is to be believed (and it usually is) the new stadium will look something along the lines of the City of Manchester Stadium. It’ll have two sweeping lines around it which change colour depending on the teams playing.

Hain on city centre stadiums

Monday, February 26th, 2007

According to the Belfast Telegraph, Peter Hain seems to have taken somewhat of a u-turn on the plans for a national stadium at the former Maze Prison site. Hain told BBC Radio Five Live of the advantages of having a city centre stadium compared with one out of town.

This is in stark contrast to the Northern Ireland Office who have repeatedly dismissed any ideas for the new stadium to be built in Belfast rather than the former Maze Prison site near Lisburn.

The Stadium for Belfast petition has just found an unlikely allay.
